Refrigerant filters driers

Picture

The filter drier

There are 2 types of filter driers used in refrigeration and air conditioning.
Liquid line drier
This one is used in the liquid line usually just before the expansion device.
This part is sometimes included when the machine is manufactured.
Its job is to filter out any particulates and has a desiccant  designed to absorb moisture from the refrigerant.
They are usually replaced when the system is opened for repairs.  Often oversized driers will be used when repairs are made.
Suction line drier
This one is installed in the suction line just before the compressor.  They are used when a major repair is done (such as compressor replacement).  The are installed when there is a probability particulates and acids may be in the system from a compressor burnout.

The reversing liquid line Heat pump drier

The drier used in heat pumps may be required to be reversible due to the reversing flow of refrigerant.
This makes the design of the drier more complicated to keep the contaminates from being released into the system when the refrigerant flow reverses.
