Air conditioner split system troubleshoot 

 Indoor coil            indoor unit or furnace              outdoor unit

Above are the 3 components of the split system air conditioner

The indoor coil:  The indoor coil or evaporator is located at the outlet of the indoor unit or furnace
The indoor unit:  The indoor unit has a fan to move the air through the indoor coil. 
The outdoor unit:  The outdoor unit contains the condenser, compressor  and operating controls.

Steps to troubleshoot the split system air conditioner.  
Check the symptoms: 
Nothing happens at all:  click here
Thermostat ok but still nothing happens:  click here
Both indoor and outdoor fans run but no cool:  click here
Outdoor unit humms but outdoor fan does not come on or makes noise click here
Indoor fan runs but outdoor unit does not continue below. 

Check the air conditioner breaker.

A breaker similar to this one should be in the main panel and marked as air conditioner.  If it shuts off again when turned on, there is a short in the system.  At this point if you are not confident of your ability, call a professional.  
If all is OK, proceed below.

The outdoor disconnect

The disconnect is located usually on the wall next to the air conditioner.  Inside there will be 2 fuses or a double breaker.  

The following procedures require the use of a voltmeter and the ability to use it.

The outdoor unit will have a removable cover usually located near the conduit entrance.  

If power is available at the contactor, but the unit does not run.
